5-a-side football
Nine teams from five packs took part the annual District Cub 5-a-side that had been postponed from earlier in the year. Again held on the all weather pitch of the RGS in Guildford (although this year stayed dry), the afternoon started with the packs getting their teams together. For most, this was straightforward, but Cranleigh had to build up their team by borrowing a couple from Merrow, and Ripley were determined to stay pure by fielding a team of just 4 throughout the afternoon. Would this year be the year of the underdogs, or would the group with most teams triumph again?
The first semi-final saw Cranleigh+2 beat the Merrow Wanderers by one goal to nil in extra time, and the second semi followed suit with Ripley beating Wonersh Tangley by the same score line, again in extra time.
Thus the final was played out between the two underdogs of the day, and with the time ticking by, it looked as if we would again be deciding the tournament with a penalty shootout. However, a late push from the team of 4 got Ripley the winning goal just before full time which meant that Cranleigh+2 were this years runners-up.
Thanks must go to Frank Lintott for keeping control on proceedings, Graham Bex and the RGS for the use of their facilities, and Howard our Ref from Merrow for ensuring fairplay.
Also this term, Packs have been taking part in the District Challenge to collect plastic milk bottle tops. Many thanks to everyone that has been helping the cub section with this challenge, and also to those of you that have been falling over bags of tops in you HQs! As well as collecting to win the challenge, the tops are also for a good cause. Pam Hickman (ADC Cubs of Horley District) has been raising funds for a 6 year old girl called Becky at her Church who has cerebral palsy. Becky is in a wheelchair, is dependent on adults for her care routines, is fed via a gastro tube, is non verbal and communicates with her eye movements. She is in need of a communication device that she can activate with her eye movements. This device, which is also known as a Voice Output Communication Aid (or VOCA for short) costs more than £10,000, and the milk bottle tops are different way of helping raise the money. The winners of the challenge will be decided at our Christmas party.
